Foxcroft Academy sports update: Boyer and Morrison have huge track meets, baseball and softball reach eight wins, tennis sweeps WA

Peter Boyer 05-01

The boys track team scored 103 points to finish third behind Old Town and Hampden Academy in a PVC regular-season meet held at Old Town on Saturday.

Pete Boyer, who rode back from Disney World on a bus with the marching band and did not return home until early Saturday morning, put forth a dominant performance in the throwing events, handily winning the shot put, javelin, and discus. The talented senior, who has committed to play football at Bates College next year, threw the shot an even 50 feet to smash the facility record of 45-03.75 he set in Old Town last year.

Cooper Nelson ran 4:54.47 to win the 1600-meter run, Edison Chen placed third in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, Julian Zepeda finished third in the 100-meter dash, and Gabe Piquette took third in the 3200-meter run.

In relay action, Jason Eubanks, Julian Zepeda, Dylan Richards, and Sebastian Zepeda finished second in the 4×100 while Liam Casey, Kelly Erickson, Nathnael Feleke, and Kohei Kotani took third in the 4×800.

The girls team scored 43 points to place fifth. Fern Morrison was terrific for the Ponies, winning both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run, and Annie Rich outpaced the rest of the field in the javelin with a throw of 91-00. Jennifer Clawson took third in the 3200-meter run, Virginia Macomber and Anna Sedlackova were fourth and fifth in the 1600-meter run, and Renee Smith picked up a point with a sixth-place finish in the shot put.

Coach Robert Weber’s Ponies are now set to compete in the PVC Championship Meet, which will be held at Foxcroft Academy this Friday at 3:30 pm.

walk off win vs Presque Isle (web)

The baseball team picked up an impressive 5-1 road win at Hermon on Thursday and then walked off with a dramatic 8-7 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Presque Isle on Saturday. Eli Olson played the hero in game one, ripping a single to left to score Billy Brock, who had tripled with two outs. The Ponies then fell 6-3 in the nightcap and are now 8-4 on the season with remaining games at Dexter (Tuesday, 4:30), vs PCHS (Thursday, 4:30), vs Ellsworth (Saturday, noon), and at John Bapst (next Tuesday, 4:30).

Through 12 games, catcher Brooks Law paces the Ponies with a .385 batting average and 13 RBI. Dylan Huff, who smacked three doubles on Saturday, is hitting .375 with a team-best .559 on-base percentage. Chandler Rockwell has heated up out of the leadoff spot and is now batting .368 while pacing the team with 14 runs and 12 stolen bases.

Abe Simpson was brilliant on the mound at Hermon, yielding four hits and zero walks in a complete-game effort. The junior is now 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA. Nate Church continues to be a force out of the bullpen, posting a 1.00 ERA in 15 innings of work.

Coach Mark Chevalier’s Ponies are now seventh in the Class B East Heal Point standings, which are tightly packed from spots 3-8.

The softball team picked up a key sweep of ninth-ranked Presque Isle (12-0 in game one and 8-2 in game two) on Saturday after falling 4-1 to a very tough Hermon squad on Thursday. Coach Scott Anderson’s Ponies are now 8-4 and have risen to fourth in the Class B East Heal Point standings, less than one point behind #3 Hermon. Like the baseball team, they’ll finish with games against Dexter, PCHS, Ellsworth, and John Bapst.

Five Ponies are hitting over .400 through 12 games: Abbi Bourget (12-24 with five RBI), the red-hot Gabie Johnson (.432 with three doubles and seven RBI), Alli Bourget (.426 with 14 stolen bases and 11 runs), Grace Bickford (.425 with seven extra-base hits, 14 runs, and nine RBI), and Desirae Brawn, who has come on strong and is now hitting .405 with a team-leading seven doubles.

Freshman Jenna Clukey has pitched very well of late and is now 6-3 with a 4.20 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 67 innings.

Madison Fadley, Ricky Chen, and Jen Boyer picked up singles’ victories while Lexi Raymond-Maria Cedeno and Hannah Vainio-Jessica Breton took care of business in doubles. The Ponies are now 7-4 and ranked eighth in the Class B East Heal Point standings.

The boys team also fell twice to MDI before picking up a 3-2 win over WA on Saturday. Fernando Caceres won at #1 singles while both doubles’ teams (Bram Dennis-Nick Boyd and Woojun Kim-Matthew Baiamonte) earned victories. Now 8-3, the Ponies occupy the eighth spot in Class B East.

Both teams will close the regular season with matches at Dexter on Tuesday.
